Being the new kid is always a struggle for children and teens entering an already-established group environment. At VBS, it feels a little like showing up to a party where you don’t know anyone. There’s energy and inside jokes already happening, and new students can sometimes find themselves trying to figure out where to stand without looking awkward. But no more!
VBS is one of the best chances to help new students feel like they immediately belong. With a little intention and a few well-timed high-fives, you can turn “I’m the new kid” nerves into “I can’t wait to come back tomorrow” excitement! 😁
First Impressions Matter
For many students, VBS is their first encounter with your youth group, making it the ultimate first impression. The first few moments matter more than you think. Before they hear a lesson, play a game or sing a song, they’re already asking, “Do I feel comfy here? Or is this super awkward for me?” (not out loud, but definitely inside their heads).
A welcoming, organized environment with people who are genuinely excited to see them makes a big difference right away. It doesn’t have to be perfect or Pinterest-worthy. Just aim for warm and welcoming. Think less “flawless event production” and more “we saved you a spot, and we’re thrilled you’re here!”
Make it Easy to Know Where to Go and What to Do
There’s a very specific kind of awkward feeling that comes from not knowing where to go or what to do. You know, the standing in one place and looking around as you try to casually scan the room for a sign, a clue, something that points you in the right direction. Clear signage, a smooth check-in process and smiling faces ready to jump in and help can completely curb that moment. Make it to where students and families can walk in and feel like, “Okay, we’ve got this. This is easy.” No awkward, Where’s Waldo situation to recover from sets a positive tone for everything else to come.
Focus on Small Moments of Big Impact
Here’s the thing: it’s not always the big, flashy moments that stick with new students. Often, it’s the small ones. Someone remembering their name (on day one or two? ELITE behavior), asking what they’re into or making sure they’re included goes a super long way. These little interactions say, “Hey, you matter here.” For new youth ministry students, these small moments during VBS mean the world. 🫶
Build Belonging into the Schedule
VBS schedules are packed with fun activities, engaging lesson plans and special themes. When building out your itinerary, make sure to weave in connection and belonging. A game of icebreakers that’s actually fun and not cringey usually gets the ball rolling. Because let’s be real, walking up to a small group and saying, “Hi, can I join?” is a bold move, one that many new students probably aren’t going to take. So taking time to make sure everyone is introduced and included from the very beginning makes building connections much more natural (and way less nerve-racking).
Keep the Door Open After VBS Ends
VBS might wrap up in a week, but the opportunity to welcome new faces into your group doesn’t! A quick, “Hey, how did you enjoy VBS this week?” or “We had so much fun with you here, and we’d love to see you on the reg!” leaves a huge, lasting impression. Without leaving that door open and extending that invite, new kids may feel unsure about joining the group permanently, even if they really want to. The small effort to welcome them with open arms says, “Hey, we meant it when we said we’re glad you’re here.”
At the end of the day (or the beginning, or the middle, lol), making new youth ministry students feel welcome during VBS is all about being genuine. Now that you know how to make this year’s VBS a smashing success for both existing and new students, it’s time to go forth and conquer, brave youth pastor!
