Things to Keep in Mind When Designing Your Next Youth Group T-Shirt

Too many youth group t-shirts are worn once before disappearing into the dark corners of a closet or dresser drawer (RIP, forgotten tees). But the really good ones? They become beloved everyday pieces of students’ wardrobes. You know, the shirts they wear to school, throw on to hang out with friends or even sleep in years later. The secret to creating a shirt that builds community and that your kiddos will love wearing is all in the details. Before you place your next order, keep these youth ministry t-shirt ideas in mind:

First Things First: What’s the Occasion?

We know that coming up with a t-shirt design for your youth group is exciting, and sometimes the creativity can take over before you’ve nailed down what the shirt is for. Start by thinking about why you need shirts. Maybe it’s for summer camp or a fall retreat, or maybe it’s for an upcoming mission trip or simply for a weekly group gathering. Whatever the case, your shirts’ purpose guides every design choice. Think about it. A shirt for a high-energy summer camp will have a totally different vibe than a shirt for a chill fall retreat (a.k.a., one super fun and bright, and one toned down and calm).

A great youth group t-shirt design should make a statement without making people work for it.  If someone has to lean in, grab the shirt or decode any elements to figure out what’s going on, it’s probably best to go simpler. Stick with clean fonts, a strong message, and easily recognizable visual elements and motifs. The most impactful designs are the ones that people spot from across the room. Plus, a clean, well-loved-by-others design usually has a better chance of becoming a student favorite rather than a forgotten old friend (we’re looking at you, tees in the bottom of the drawer). 

Comfy Shirts = Happy Students

Aside from a cool design with eye-catching colors, your youth group’s t-shirts need to be comfy. If they’re not…well, you know the drill. Even the most awesome design won’t get much love if the shirt feels like cardboard. When designing your tees, think about comfort, fit and quality. If your students have to wear them all day for an event or community service, comfy tees are key. Think about which brands offer the softest, most breathable fabrics.
