What Makes Youth Ministry Students Invite Their Friends to the Group (and What Doesn’t)

Like us, teens don’t invite their friends to everything. No one’s probably texting the group chat like, “Hey, you HAVE to come to this thing I go to where I have an okay time.” Instead, it’s probably more like, “OMG! We have SO much fun. You HAVE to come!”

When it comes to youth group invites, that text only happens if your youth group is epic. We know that, as the totally awesome and fearless youth group leader you are, your group is probably already pretty epic. But there are always ways to go the extra mile to seal the deal when it comes to your kiddos inviting their friends. So let’s talk about what makes that happen and what doesn’t.

It’s a Place Where You Belong (Not Just Attend)

Youth group gatherings can feel like one of two things: a place where teens feel like it’s their space or a place where they sit awkwardly together. Your students will invite their friends to a group where they feel like it’s their space, where their other friends are and where conversations are never dull. If your teens know that new students always feel welcome and excited (instead of left standing alone pretending to check their phone), then they’re way more likely to say, “Hey, you should come with me to our next group meeting. I think you’ll really like it, and my friends there will really like you!”

Fun is Built-In

Feeling welcome is one thing, but fun brings it to a whole other level. Your group doesn’t have to be over-the-top chaotic all the time (a little chaos sometimes never hurts, though), but it does have to be something students enjoy being a part of. Think events and gatherings they look forward to, games that get people laughing or even feeling a little competitive (in a friendly way, of course), movie nights, bonfires, and those random funny conversations that become inside jokes later. It’s the kind of fun that happens naturally and moments that students never stop talking about. When experiences with your youth group stick with them like that, inviting a friend isn’t far behind.

The Vibes are Always Right (You Know it When You Feel it)

There’s always one thing youth ministry students can’t forget, and that’s vibes. How your youth group makes them feel is the secret sauce. Simply put, good vibes happen when leaders are approachable, there’s no weird pressure, cliques aren’t dominating the room, and teens can just show up and be themselves. Things like forced energy, awkward conversations and that uncomfortable feeling like you’re being watched instead of welcomed are all examples of not-so-good vibes. If your group environment is easy to walk into, it’s easy to invite someone else into. 😉

It’s About Real Faith (Not Just Surface Level Stuff)

Above everything else, it has to be centered on faith. Just make sure it’s always in a way that actually connects. Surface-level talks don’t really do the trick, but real convos, community outreach, and lessons that your youth ministry students can carry with them in their real lives—that’s the stuff that clicks. If your group is a place where students can ask questions, feel inspired and supported, and talk about the tough stuff sometimes, that’s a one-way ticket to inviting friends. Pair that with fun and inside jokes, you’ve got an award-winning combo!

Snacks Help. A Lot

Now listen, this wouldn’t be a proper youth ministry conversation if we didn’t talk snacks. Let’s not overthink this one. Snacks equal immediate good vibes. No snacks equal sad teens. Will students invite their friends just because of the snacks? Probably not. But do snacks make everything better? Of course they do! So keep that snack drawer stocked! 🥨

At the end of the day, teens want to bring their friends around places that feel fun and where they can be themselves. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about being real. And hey, it never hurts when the group looks like a group. Inside jokes and shared moments pair well with matching youth ministry tees.
